I am running a one month old PC.

For the first time today, I had a problem with the CD drive. I was trying to copy image files from the CD a non-rewriteable one, for what thats worth to a folder on my desktop. I had no problem with nine of the files all 36Mb TIFF -  but it wouldnt copy the last one. An error message appeared saying, Cannot copy X file. Not an MSDos task. Or words to that effect.

I phoned the computer manufacturers helpline and they said that it is a read problem. They said that I should be careful about the brand of CD I use. I must admit that these CDs were dirt cheap.

Obviously, I have no reason to believe that there is anything wrong with the CD drive yet! But..

  1. Is this a common problem?
  2. What brand of CD do the more experienced of you recommend? The Helpline said Sony or HP.
  3. Is it more likely that the CD drivers would need to be reinstalled than that the driver itself might need to be repaired?
  4. Is there best practice that can be observed when burning/copying image files?

Thanks.

D.
