The best advice I can offer him is to ditch the Alcatel USB modem and get an Ethernet modem/router instead - something like the D-Link DSL300G+ ADSL Ethernet Modem for 64 would be ideal.

With this type of device there is no software driver to worry about, there is no logon procedure or connect button: its on all the time (even if his Mac is switched off). It is configured easily via a web browser.

One of our crew had tried in vain to connect to Virgin Broadband on his G4 i.mac
He is using the supplied and recomended alcatel modem and has no choice other than to use the BT exchange

Virgin help say macs are rubbish, that the software is flawed and that the USB port is under powered.

BT say the problem is you have to hit the connect button faster than a ninja (their words)

I've told him to update from 10.2.0 and see what that does and to put the connect in the log in items, but in the meantime is anyone else on virgin BB?
