We need to save a large number of images for the web, each having a 13
digit original number, plus we need to add e.g. 123_lc_1_s.jpg

Using PS7 the automated task window seems overly complicated, indeed
there are 2 to choose from, which window do we use?

We enter all the correct info, eg slice or doc name, plus the under
scores etc and .ext? even tried .jpg, but when saved it reverts back
to the original file name
in the save as window.

I suppose we could batch rename them first, but it would be nice not to
have to.

I would suggest that you use the batch rename feature in the Photoshop 7 File Browser.

The batch rename dialog allows you to assign a two, three or four name serial number. But what if you want to add to an existing number sequence? Instead of choosing the serial number option, enter #027# for example if you want the first number to begin with 027.
