David, Sorry, I've shot loads of people against white on both a D1 and a D1X and I have not come across this problem. Does the edge line appear regardless of camera settings such as tone and sharpening etc? What were the settings on the example you posted? Regarding the OSX stuff, my initial reaction was exactly the same as yours but I soon realised it's not just a pretty face. If your sticking with Mac then you may as well hop on the bus and enjoy the ride, there is no turning back.
