Hi Donald,
Have only recently sold the last of my three A-1 bodies & lenses - I've shot
with them for almost 20yrs & regard them very highly. I bought an EOS film
body about 8 yrs ago but for most things I preferred shooting with the old
A-1's.
I've been shooting just about everything on the Canon D60 digital for the
past year so finally parted with the A-1's & a host of FD manual focus
lenses (it still feels odd to adjust apertures with the wheel on the back of
the camera!).
There's nothing 'digital' that I know of that will work with the A-1 (altho'
at one stage I was holding my breath for that infamous 'digital film insert'
device). The change of body design from FD lens mount to EF lens mount also
meant a change of lots of accessory plug types, etc.
I'm surprised at the high price you quoted from ebay - they tend too sell
for about that price in New Zealand dollars here (about half US price), but
good examples don't come up too often (you could try
http://www.progear.co.nz ).
I'd be a bit weary of ongoing repairs - I kept 3 because of this - but never
actually had any problems.

Cheers,
Mike Clare
