We indeed looked at this with Eyelike when I was with KJP/Bowens/Cambo back in 95/96 and indeed as far as I recall we had a pretty basic prototype with some movements running on servo stepper motors controlled by sharpness measuring software.
The project was canned because the development and production costs far outweighed any projected sales revenue possibility.
So you won't need a PhD project, that work's already been done - you'll just need a lot of photographers prepared to commit to a lot of investment :-)
