I've got some (possibly) bad news for you Paul.

We've been burning cds to archive all our projects for well over six years now, all have been written on with sharpies (ultra-fine point) and not one has ever come up as unreadable or had the slightest problem. All have been stored in paper sleeves we had custom printed with our studio info.

Maybe we've just been incredibly lucky.

I deliberately write on my Client CD's with a Sharpie for this very purpose.
If it degrades the CD after a while, great. It only needs to last them long
enough to use the image for the first time, not posterity. I hope it does
make my CD's unreadable soon after they get used.
