What you have to understand is that Classic is an OS9 emulator running within OSX. When Rod talks about 9.x.x he means booting straight into 9.x.x, not from within OSX. So no Classic is not OS9.2.2. To most intents and purposes they work the same, but there are some hardware and driver compatibilities that don't act the same.
Obviously Classic runs at the same time as OSX (though you don't have to have it running - I don't - as I hardly use it any more and just start it up when needed), but to run OS9.2.2 you would have to close down OSX and reboot into OS9.2.2.
I know it can be confusing until you actually try it. I must admit I was confused by reading about it and only properly understood it when I saw it demonstrated.

Umm, bit confused, I thought Os 9.2 was classic. Rod, are you saying that
the new machines will ONLY boot into OSX but that you can run 9.2 from
within it?
