Ian,
I have had what sounds like a similar problem with winXP, I had the data
recovered but have not yet got to the bottom of the problem. A second
hard drive on my system just became inaccessible. The recovery people
said there was no sign of any virus and would offer no suggestion as to
the cause; I will be interested in anything you discover about the
problem.
