Simon I just knew you would ask me that! There are two sizes of firewire plugs and sockets. I think one is 6 wire and one is 4 wire. But the size difference is very obvious. The big one is like a church arch, the smaller one isn't. I haven't found any difference in using either, but I am sure someone could inform you more accurately about the technical differences My Sony Vaio has a built in firewire port (well done Sony) which has the small socket, but as I am using that for other things, I bought the PCMCIA card. For me the big advantage of the two size adapter is that you can choose your cable. I have found availability of long firewire leads to be very variable, so choice is good. I found I needed a cable in excess of 3 metres and that was difficult. I think the PCMCIA card was around �60.
