May I suggest to not throw it away yet?

There was an interesting discusion in Rob's forum about this issue when a
shooter was doing thousand of pictures everyday, for several days ,working in
tandem with a digital assistant ( to download the data for backup and format
the cards) and basic conclusions is that this sort of mishappens start and
reoccur whenthings like erasing files, formating etc are done outside the
camera. Cards even showed problems( missing files was one of them) if they
were reformatting the card in a camera body, and then using the card in
another(rented) body, due to the unfortunate case of having two identical
cameras , but two different firmware versions.
If I remember well, basically there are two different formatting methods in
DOS and Macs in particular would format in DOS in the less adequate way and
it is advisable to not ever do it.

Try to get the card run an formatted in a PC with a recent OS ( like XP)
and see it it comes back to life in the camera. The difference apparently
lies in some invisible files that are lost after a poor formatting, and this
renders the card partially or totally useless. THe odds of your case being a
software problem rather than a hardware one makes it all a very interesting
case of study.

Should that be the case, then remember to not ever format outside the
camera. Ever again. THat is so far the best way to secure your data.

   All the best.
