With an image open in Photoshop a convert to profile causes the image to
change density in the brighter and high-light areas of the image.

I thought that Convert to Profile left the image on screen unaffected..? <<

Mike, perhaps you are thinking of assign profile here, the current mode and
numbers do not change - but the perceived description/definition does. As
the name suggests, convert does convert and depending on the gamut of the
original and destination you can get variation.

We need to know the profile and the render intent - but let me guess, its a
Perceptual/Image render, right? And a less common third party profile and
not a v2 Adobe profile?

Some folk who make profiles think that a luminance and or hue/chroma shift
that departs from the in-gamut original is a good thing - but not me. The
source image should be reproduced as close as possible. If I want to make
creative decisions about how tone and colour is placed, then it seems
counter intuitive to have to set-up a softproof and perform edits in the
original to factor in the wacky profile.

Stephen Marsh.
