Mike, one easy solution that doesn't require too much tinkering around and
exchanging ink systems is buying something like an Epson 7600 (24"), and
setting it up with a RIP (with full control over individual inks).

You can print on everything from Art papers to certain glossy surfaces, over
archival matte, and you can get really big ink tanks.

Then you make a CMYK profile that primarily uses Black and light Black and
lower the other colours to extremely low values. This will allow you to
print very nice B&W with long durability (probably 60-80 years pending on
paper), and you can tone the prints at your whim, much like Lyson's Small
Gamut inkset.

I doubt you'll get a good functioning one cheap, and then there is the
Brisque RIP (or similar to run it) which will really cost you. Also be aware
that maintenance is very expensive, even with a service contract.
