Got advise from forum at MacGurus.com; great help and advise on a multitude of levels from general trouble shooting, ATA devices, SCSI, RAIDs, and more. Problem was a USB hub. Disconnecting it allowed the computer to shut down instead of restarting. Apple had a note about it: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58171 I have had other conflicts with this hub connected, such as keyboard and mouse not working when starting up. No idea why it plays nicely together sometimes, and other times wreaks havoc.
