I periodically have this problem (same configuration)... end up pushing the
big round button button on the front of the box for as long as it takes to
turn the thing off (6 seconds?).

I have never bothered to really get to the bottom of it, but I think that it
may be due to networking activity... I have another Mac networked via a
cross-over cable, and I think that everything shuts down fine if either the
networked computer is still on, or the network was never activated.

Doesn't like trying to terminate network activity to a computer that has
vanished.

(Similarly, if the networked computer is turned off, the G4 will wait until
the network times-out before completing startup, a wait of long enough that
you think you've got a terminal crash-on-startup type situation.)

This might help, and would be interested in any comments anyway.
