Hey Guys Got mine today as well. Stefanie, you didn't get it from Jessops, Finchley Road did you? I ask as there was a Stefanie who was buying one in front of me..small world if it was you.
You are right, the moment you initiate digital ICE, the grain dissolver is automatically activated. There is definitely no way to deactivate this. I've noticed that using the dissolver increases scanning time with obvious differences in contrast and sharpness. I've got to have a play with the focusing controls and am not au fait with initiating manual control yet but I'm working on it, apparently Pixel polish can't be used in 16-bit linear images or B&W either, think B&W that can process in C-41 chemistry is ok though. I've been configuring the exposure options for the negative because I've found with thin negatives, the autoexposure function is not brilliant but it could be down to my ineptitude. One thing I like and anyone with an LS-4000 would appreciate this I'm sure, the film/slide holders on the Minolta are great. They're sturdy and not fiddly with spring loaded clips that lock the frame of the holders down. My biggest bugbear was the lack of adequate recess to hold the negative strip in with the LS-4000 and when you're doing serious volume, this would drive me nuts. I can't use my panoromic X-pan shots as the holders are framed at 24x36mm - enquired of a spare negative strip transport but they're not available as individual order items yet, I suspect I may have to set upon one with a craft knife when they are. That will generate an awesome file size in 16-bit mode...Talking of resolution, am impressed with detailing - took a shot of a VW Kombie in Brighton and at max resolution, was able to read the name of the hotel it was parked opposite off the chrome rim of the headlamps. I'd better get to bed, been a bit absorbed with the new toy. Will post any constructive comments as and when. The interesting point is (apart from that Jessops seems to be the first one that has them in stock???) that normally Jessops would not really pricematch if the other company hasn't got it in stock yet -which was the case with warehouseexpress, but seemed to be happy with the fact that warehouse had ordered them and Minolta had already dispatched them. So you can tell your local Jessops about my case. The other thing (I had no real chance to check the scanner out yet) is and I am replying to somebody a couple of days ago who was concerned with the grain reduction- that it seems sofar that as soon as you use ICE the grain reduction filter is automatically switched on- so it seems you can't use one without the other. But I will let you know more the next days- the pixel polish can not be used when in 16bit mode- I anyhow think it is more useful to use the photoshop tools for this, but thought I let you know. Kodakchrome films or traditional black and white films can not be used with ICE (no idea how this is with other scanners?) As soon as I know more (the file size of around 206 mb in 16 bit mode or half in 8 bit is indeed very impressive...) I let you know.
