To remove folders from a compact flash card, they survive re formatting in the camera. Apparently if you reformat in a computer using a card reader, this sorts it. Problem is you cannot reformat the card in OS X, or apparently not to something the camera will like! Reboot into OS 9 will work but not if you have a OS X boot only laptop on location.
