Heres hoping someone can help with this. I have tried the extensis website
but its about as user friendly as the Portfolio manual. If there is a more
suitable forum for this question I'd appreciate it.
I have Portfolio 5, but am prepared to purchase other software if its
demonstrably superior and by that I mean more intuitive and easier to use. I
must say I am fairly disappointed with Portfolio as it seems to be designed
for programmers rather than photographers. (or is it just me). I am only
experimenting with Portfolio at this stage. I'm pretty sure there will be
users of both programs and perhaps others, at Prodig. Has anyone had
experience with both Portfolio and Fotostation.
If I do build an extensive catalogue and decide to change to lets say
Fotostation at a later date are the files they produce compatible with each
other or do you have to start all over again? I believe this is crucial as
the database it produces will be a major investment in time and if Extensis
goes bellyup or the product is discontinued for some reason, I need to be
confident that the data can be transferred to another product.
I've only just started experimenting with Extensis Portfolio 5/ PC Windows
with the aim of making my files more accessible.
I backup all shoots on CD and these CD's are stored in job envelopes, ie Job
F833 will have disks numbered F833-001, F833-002 etc. I usually burn the
disks in one hit and they get assigned a number from I know not where ie:
030527_1213 etc. Portfolio catalogues these disks using this number and asks
for that disk when you want to access the original file. Surely there is an
easy way to assign a user friendly name to each disk? I can't even find a
hard way to do it! Most consumer level products I've played with make this
very easy, in fact asking you to assign a name to the disk you are
cataloguing.

Thanks in advance!
