Despite working for Microsoft he's right. LZW is lossless - but the 
algorithm has to be licensed & many software packages (especially on 
PC's) won't pay the license fee & thus can't open LZW tiff's.  So to be 
safe I don't send out compressed files.

The amount of compression varies from image to image however - 
sometimes it hardly makes any difference at all.
