Another solution if you are close to your car at least, is to buy a 12v to 240v inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet. I think Maplin have one for around 40.00. I was caught by the 4pin-6pin Firewire 'issue' too.
Question: How many Apple laptops have a 6 pin Firewire, sounds like it could be one of those 'key' points in changing from PC's to Apple? Geoff >Hands up those of you that have guessed my error? I now realise that my >Lacie pocket hard drive is >useless on location as PC laptops only have a 4 >pin FireWire socket rather than the 6 pin which allows >you power >peripherals from the PC power supply (common to desktops and of course the >Apple >Powerbook!) I had the same trouble and overcame it by buying a small (6in x6in x 2in) 12 v battery (17Ah) from HAlfords (39) and a Belkin invertor 30 from PC world). This solution is a little heavy, but definitely portable, and it will also happily recharge the laptop and my portable printer, giving at least 12 hours PC and printing work away from mains.
