Hi list,
Has anyone had any experience or results from ICG drum scanners?
I have read some nice remarks on flaar, but wondered if anyone used one in
uk.

Dear Graeme

The ICG drum scanners have a good name, but as you will be well aware the technical support for drum scanners generally is at a rather low ebb and unlikely to improve. ICG have been through several owners in recent times, so obviously you would need to ensure that you have the assurance of continued support into the future. This is no different for any drum scanner these days, as this is a specialist market with the costs that go with it. This may have a bearing on what you have to charge your scans out at.

Trying to decide whether to move up to 848 Flextight or take the leap to drums....

Well only you can decide of course.....depends on your needs, but as far as I am concerned, if you seriously want top quality out of film, there is only one way to go. To get the best results from drum scanners you have to do the whole thing right, or it's likely to be just an expensive diversion. Cleanliness and attention to detail are prerequisites, as is a dedicated 'clean room' where you must have proper ventilation, preferably filtered.

Perhaps the most important thing you will need to consider is that it's far more difficult to suddenly find someone with the necessary skills to run your drum scanning service if the need arises....it really is very different to loading and scanning on an Imacon, Nikon etc., scanner for example.

Best of luck with your decision.

Cheers

Richard
