Am looking to buy an A3 Epson printer mainly for portfolio prints - is it
really a choice between the 1290S, 2000P and 2100? If so, which of these is
generally regarded as the best?

Don't go for the 2100 if you use OSX as you lose so many options - no edge
to edge printing, no centring of images, no CD printing, doesn't work with
the greyscale printing option.
Epson are still way behind on up to date drivers.

Whilst I'd agree that Epson's OSX drivers are a 'work in (slow) progress', the latest 2100 driver does offer borderless printing, by the rather strange method of selecting a different 'printer' in the print centre. Not sure about the CD printing or the auto trimmer. The Grey Balancer software was OS9 only, and I've heard very mixed reports of it's value - so far I've had no issues on the few occasions I've made B&W prints on the 2100 from OSX.

From what I've read on the Mac-Epson list Epson have been behind with many of their drivers.

As for the print quality: I find the 2100's Matte prints are superb, however you do need to use the Matte black ink for the best results. Gloss and Semi-Gloss seems quite prone to bronzing, whether that is a problem probably depends on your usage.
