note that you can't actually softproof <without a printer profile>, or
at least without some form of output profile. If you don't select a
profile Photoshop does it for you - using the default CMYK from
<color settings>.

sometimes this will happen with a high gamut image, a workingspace
(esp. a large one like ARGB) can hold a lot of unprintable colour.
Hence the need for a properly profiled [wide gamut] printer in every
studio so that CMYK output can be simulated. One further point is that
lots of that image will be outside the monitor's colourspace too.
Try setting custom softproof to the monitor profile leaving gamut
warning ON. Just to give you an idea what tone in saturated areas is
printable but not actually visible on screen.

do you have an accurate printer profile? It not only gives you accurate
prints but also a good softproof. I have clients who get every print
right first time. It takes practice to do that of course ;-} aswell as
a good profile.
