Having updated my machine and trying to use Vuescan version 7.6.54 when serial number is entered an error message says I need to update my serial number. I have tried to follow the directions below but am unable to find a file .vuescanrc and the instructions to create .vuescanrc are unclear. Where and how do I create .vuescanrc. is this a file or folder?
Any help appreciated. I've emailed Hamrick support but as yet no reply. They're probably very busy.

If you're using Mac OS X, make sure .vuescanrc is writable in your home directory and that the HOME environment variable points to this directory. Alternatively, try creating .vuescanrc in your home directory with these two lines:

[VueScan]
SerialNumber=12345678 (put your number here)
If you're using Mac OS X or Linux and multiple people share the same computer, you can put these two lines into /etc/vuescanrc and all users of the computer will be able to use the same serial number.
