I have been running an 1160 and a 1290 side by side on my OS10.2.6 G4 since early this year with absolutely no problem, and this is not a printer dedicated box, it's fully networked running pretty much everything you can think off. Methinks your problem must be some other conflict on your system. I think Shangara's suggestion to run the [printers on a clean system and add bits back in one by one is a good one.
