[PRODIG] CD drive lens question

Is there a techie in the house?    Having just replaced a faulty CD 
drive naturally I took the old one apart to see why it had been so 
unreliable in it's ability to read all disks tried in it.    Looking 
directly at the lens through a loupe, the central area is not clear and 
has the appearance of having broken down as there is an irregular dark 
area.

I wonder if anyone can throw any light on this as I am just interested.
