The problem is I am now tempted to buy C1 but of course there is the
new photoshop waiting in thew wings. Does anyone know if the changes in
photoshop CS extend to any improvements in the RAW import? Adobe's site
is a bit vague about it. Obviously if it is improved then it might be
worth waiting, if not I will go ahead and get C1- a little reluctantly
'cos the processing stage is awfully slow, but the results are
noticeably better.

David,

If you work on one file at a time, want speedy conversion and can live with
the tiny preview and fewer tools, then ACR will get you there quickly. C1
gives you a larger preview image, better conversion, and more tools and
flexibility. However, the actual conversion is slower. The answer is the
understand and use the batching capabilities of C1 and to work on a number
of images before you open them in PS. If you deal with one image at a time
and open immediately in PS, it is very frustrating.

It's well worth studying the C1 help files as the program has hidden depths.
Also excellent is the support forum on http://www.pictureflow.com/forum/ . I
am impressed too by the positive response to suggestions for improving this
program.
