One question always leads to another though - when
you say that you sharpen through a mask -  is this similar to the technique
that was described a few weeks ago by Thomas Holm involving a separate layer
and blending options? Or is it something else entirely?

There are many techniques available involving the use of masks and/or
layers. Here is an article by Bruce Fraser advocating 2 stage sharpening
involving the use of masks:
