Yes, Apple has been guilty from time-to-time, in issuing software that doesn't work right. I've never seen an instance when they didn't pull the software, address the issue, and ASAP, get new software online to replace it. Unlike Microsoft, who issued Word 4.0 so they could get it out in time for Christmas shopping......with over 400 "bugs", and didn't get it fixed til well into April the following year. Even people who had pirated the software were calling and writing MS complaining. Microsoft described a lot of these problems as "features". It became a joke.
When I read that someone did the update, then restored from his CarbonCopyCloner backup from his laptop, and then experiences kernel panics....I KNOW that the problem is NOT with the System Software build, but the way the individual user goes about the maintenance of his computer.
When someone writes:
< I would be interested to learn from those who now are experiencing problems whether they first shut down and removed all peripherals (USB disks and accessories, Firewire, ethernet); fixed permissions before and after installation; and ran a disk utility, or even fsck, before and after.
Excuse me? This is a Macintosh. The user shouldn't have to do any of those things.>
I know this guy just wants everything done and thought out for him, and doesn't really want to pay attention to procedures that are recommended by the mfgr. Probably complains about his car when it fails because he has never changed the oil in 3-4 years.
I could go through every one of those complaints, and if I had my hands on the machine for half an hour, could point out WHAT the problem really is, and I would be willing to bet you $10 that there are not one of these complaints, with build 6R73, that are traceable to the System Software or the installer.
I DO read these forums, since I have about 150 clients on Mac OS X, and support a department of 25 graphic designers, 4 production artists, 3 Production Mgrs, 3 bilingual translators, 1 legal, 4 project coordinators, and a Director, all on OS X 10.2.8, (now), all networked, on the internet, and sitting in the midst of a Windows environment, and not ONE of them, on this build, has had any such problems. Including myself, with two operating Macs, both on OS 10.2.8.
So, Clive, regardless of what you may think, I stand by what I said. 10.2.8, build 6R73 is clean. Install according to the directions and Apples recommendations, read the Knowledge Base articles pertaining to your machine, make sure your 3rd party apps are compatible before you start, make sure your haxies are written correctly....and you WON'T have any problems. Too many users think that some of this software is "cute", or "cool", but they really don't NEED it to actually get the work done. Cute and cool software is OK..use it if you want, but just be aware that it may drop dead when updating Sys Software; and don't complain to Apple when it or the Sys software doesn't work right. I've watched users over the years berate Apple for problems that turned out to be bootlegged or just poorly written software, poorly maintained software, hard drives so badly fragmented that performance was glacial, desktop databases that had never been rebuilt and were thus utilizing nearly the entire hard drive free space.
Please feel free to point out any one of those letters in the forum that actually point to or indicate that the problem resides with the update rather than the individual users configuration.....or their concept of what they "should" be able to expect from Apple or their Mac....and I'll be happy to say: "yes, in this one instance, out of all the others, this one appears to be a problem with the Sys software or installer."
I haven't had ANY glitchy problems with any of my clients machines that I support and advise, since OS 9.2.2. And its only gotten better since the advent of OS X 10.2

Bill,
Can I suggest you take a look at yesterday's and today's postings in Macintouch.com. It not only folk with "hackies" who are experiencing problems!
