"You don't want to do that."...You really don't want to do that. I mean, you
don't want to use your monitor profile as a working space. You want your OS
to have it for overseeing your monitor and that's about all. Other options
are undesirable, as you guessed.

If you select Proof Setup > Monitor RGB, Photoshop should grab the monitor
profile used by your OS and display the image in your monitor's color space
(or rather the space described by your monitor profile).
