Hi David, I have several custom profiles for my PII (thanks Neil) and always use the "Auto" function. It is my understanding that the software calculates the relative tonal/colour values of each individual piece of film based on the profile, gamma, and RGB values selected in your film setup, and requires you to select with the marquee tool the inside area of the film and hit the "Auto" button for this to happen.
