Inaccurate auto focus with Canon digital cameras, has been well documented on many digital photgraphy sites over the last year or so. Most sites advise checking the autofocus accuracy upon delivery of a new camera - shoot at 45 degrees along a table top with a tape measure stretched along it at full aperture. Autofocus on a particular point, then check where on the tape measure the sharpest point is. If it isn't where you expected then return the camera to your dealer. We have been lucky, both our D30 and more recently our 1Ds have been bang on, and I believe most cameras don't have a problem.
