I've been using a Wacom tablet for a couple of years now, I forget the name but it was the more costly A5 version. For photoshop work I would never look back, the speed and accuracy beats a mouse any day.

The tablets have a big footprint, mine is easily bigger than A4 in size so they do impose on your desk space, not much more than a mouse mat though. For certain procedures I use the Mac optical mouse, for double clicking through files etc, however the shiny surface of the tablet doesn't work well as a mouse mat. This problem is easily overcome my sliding a patterned image under the plastic mat that is designed to hold artwork for tracing.

I've seen graphic designers working away with a mouse and they refuse to see the benefits of a tablet. It really does help your workflow as you can assign the rocker to two buttons, ideally double click and control. The top of the pen works as an eraser, really useful in photoshop.
