[PRODIG] Creating DoF blur

I am trying to create an extreme depth of field blur on a digital image 
by my normal method;

create 2nd layer, apply Gaussian blur, add mask, brush in areas where 
blur is wanted with different brush opacities.

Unfortunately because I want quite an extreme blur to exaggerate the 
existing shallow DoF it is posterizing in bands which are quite 
noticeable at 100%. Incidentally this is similar if I try dust & 
scratches instead.

Anyone any suggestions or has anyone tried VariFocus plug-in from 
Andromeda?
