A friend of mine has recently purchased a Miglia Mediabank HS-R hot
swappable twin H/D firewire Raid case and swears by it and Miglia's
customer service (they are in the UK)

Dear Francis,

Just and idea to a long term storage solution. I am pc based and this
seems a good idea. What does anyone else think. ???. This assumes you
build your own pc's.

Get a large lian li tower or something like that with more than 4 drive
bays on the front (for me anyway). 4 may be enough for some people
(2cds,2 racks). (cases beantech, lian li, coolermaster).

If you have raid on your motherborard use that, if not get a cheap pci
raid card from maplins 19.99. Then get some beantech mobile racks from
vgi computers.

Aluminium ide caddies are 15 each and the quality is good.

The refils are about 5-10 each depending on what you want to pay. Then
get two of the largest cheapest hard drives you can find and mirror
them. Use them for mirrored storage and then when they are full pull
them out lable them and put another two hard drives with caddies in.
They are supposedly hot swappable. So may be this is a solution for long
term storage which wont get scratched.

If you need a new case then add about 80-140 for one.

Two caddies 30
Two spare cases 15
A pci raid card if you need one 20
Two large ibm/hitachi 180gb hard drives 200 for two (approx) based on
ebuyer prices

Total 265 (approx)

Seems like a good idea to me.

Any ideas why this would not work !!!. I know the Miglia is about 515
with two 120gb drives in and is portable between laptops etc, so that is
an advantage. But if you not intedning it to be mobile. May solve some
peoples needs.

Just a thought for sharing around

Dunno if this would work on a mac or not.
