"Better" is somewhat subjective. the Rebel (300DS) is a lot lot cheaper. But it is nowhere near as robust and has some dumbed down features re autofocus and exposure. At the same time it has a dedicated 18-55mm lens which looks pretty impressive both in performance and price. I have to say it is an incredible price/spec.
However - there is no easy answer. Depends what your friend wants to use it for. Suggest you read the reviews at such as www.dpreview.com
