William
apologies for late answer, my prodig mail was blocked

ICC Profiles have both an internal and external name, the internal name
is usually the same [or near] but some are quite different. If you try
changing the external name, then looking in software you'll see that
the internal name is unchanged. There are applications [and
applescripts] to alter the internal name to match a new external.

However:

Photoshop lists profiles in groups, by which folder they are in [and by
type], <recommended> is at the top of the list. Why not do a <find>
for, say <Adobe RGB>, having seen where that is you can put your other
favourites there too.

Renaming is a really easy way to totally mess up your profiles unless
you have an application like Chromix Colorthink (link at
http://www.neilbarstow.co.uk/profilgear.html ) which will not only show
you both internal and external names but allow you to manage profiles
in many ways, including renaming. Take a look, for anyone interested in
profiles and colourspaces it's a really great learning tool.

I think you'd need a hex editor, but you'll need a lot of luck to not
mess profiles up that way.
