David, I do not understand why you do this, especially as you then say:

Would you clarify why you would deliberately underexpose to then 'correct'
the data. I use Olympus E10s and E20s, and leave the camera on Auto exposure
setting. Very rarely do I have to spend any time at all correcting colour or
density. I hasten to add - that it made me feel rather humble when after
years of lightmeter readings and exposure corrections for different films/
conditions - the camera 'knew' better than I did.

That is what I do. I don't know to what extent the lab corrects my files,
not at all would be my guess, as the price I pay is for package deal!

Try the 10d's automatic settings, if anything I would have thought  they are
better than the (much cheaper) Olympus's.

Perhaps too simple an answer for you, the correct answer will no doubt come
from someone more skilled. However, I am curious why you do what you do,
because to me "If it ain't broke, dont mend it".
