Alex I chopped in my Elinchrom 500s for four 600s's and a pair of 300s's last year. It was obvious that I didn't need the power of my 404s any more and I needed finer control of exposure for digital snapping.
The 500s simply don't have the range (5 stops) and control the new heads have and the new heads deliver consistent power flash after flash. The down side is that their build strength is not as good as they heads they replaced and irritating design flaws such as vulnerable power sliders and awkward locking rings etc, mar superb performance.
