In my real world :-) I have always scanned at 100% @ maximum optical resolution in 16 bit. This way I have a master file with all corrections/retouching applied and that I can generate any subsequent use from. Unfortunately for me the extreme of this means a 5X4 tranny on my Epson flatbed @ 3200ppi in 16 bit eventually opens on my desktop as a nearly 1gigabyte file! Of course I cannot save this as a 16bit file on one CD so it does get converted to 8 bit.
