>I'm cleaning up some still life images and wondered if there is an easy way
of making a light grey background white, without affecting the main object -
is it just a case of selecting the object and altering the background in
levels / curves or is there a simpler way.

Dear Beckie,
I do not normally select the object because I think this always gives you
ptoblems with the borders of the object- what I do is in two steps:

1.I go into quickmask mode- use the gradient tool and make a gradient from
somewher closo to the corners up to the corners- go out of quickmask and
then treat the corners first, also the top and the sides.
2. Then I go into Image- Adjustments- replace colour- here you tick the part
you want to get white play around with fuzziness slider- change the
saturation to -100 and the change the lightness to +100

You need to play around with this but that's how I cleaned uo 68 portraits
the other week- and yes I have learned my lesson again: get it right in the
first place with the lighting it saves you time later- but 2 of my
background flashes gave up their work during the process... yes the
batteries and the fuses...
Good luck Beckie
