Richard
You could try renaming your Photoshop CS folder and then install in the same
top level folder so that you have something like Adobe > Adobe Photoshop
CS-old and Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CS. Rename the new folder and name the
old folder back to how it was. The old install may work at this stage
because some needed files in the system folders have either been installed
or overwritten.
If it doesn't, rename them back so the new install reads as the default name
and then replace the third party plug-ins, not the proprietary plug-ins, and
the presets folders from the first install. I wouldn't try and replace any
of the other folders or keep the old prefs, though.
On a PC, you may have to re-install some of your plug-ins if they are copied
over. I always install any plug-ins away from the main Photoshop folder and
then point to this plug-ins folder, or make an alias/shortcut and then drop
it into the Photoshop plug-ins folder.
