Many thanks to Russell et al.  That solved the problem immediately.  I 
could've sworn that I'd managed to open files after installing Panther, 
but perhaps I'm deluding myself.

Hopefully my problems will smooth the way for others upgrading to 
Panther (and it is faster...).
