I cannot for the life of me work out away to use one action to resize all
the images to about 20cm on their longest side whether Landscape or
portrait, is there a way?
Use File>Automate>Fit Image. Define a square of equal dimensions on both sides. Both horizontal and vertical images will be sized so that their longest dimension is the same as that square.
