For PC users the Hard drive manufactures provide downloadable utilities for disc checking. Yesterday I ran the Western Digital utility from the Floppy drive on bootup and it returned an error message saying contact WD for an RMA and get an exchange disc. This Ive done and in the meantime before total failure have copied the drive to a spare disk. I run this utility or the Seagate and IBM equivalents on each machine every month,its a procedure worth doing.
Many hard drives are now offered with only a 12 month warranty,these I avoid as If the manufacturers don't trust them why should we ?
