I've been struggling with this one for a while. The best PC platform I've found is Pictures2Exe (from wnsoft.com) ... fantastic bit of kit and dead easy to use, autorun slideshows etc But it doesn't run on a Mac so I put in a separate folder which has to be manually opened up with a simple slideshow from iView. This does of course mean you have two separate slideshows!
I know some wedding photographers use Roxio6 DVD burner to create movie type slideshows; this does mean that the person you sending it too has to have a DVD player of some sort though! As for something truly cross-platform I think you'll have to investigate html or Director?
