I am not familiar with this software, but it sounds like the profile was
tagged/assigned to the image, there was no conversion. Did the files date
stamp change or did the files numbers change?

Assign the A98 profile to the image in Photoshop (incorrect behaviour unless
this image is in A98 from the camera). Does the false profile assignment of
A98 look the same as the result of manage profile in iVMP?

I think Nikon have their own flavour of A98, but you are correct - a
'standard' should only have one definition.
