I hadn't run any filters, though I was in 16 bit. Still not sure of the answer as it happened once just before Christmas. I have made several scans since (B/W negs) and it hasn't happened again. A suggestion was that PS had a turn when saving the file (it was not apparent when working on the file until after re-opening)!
Whilst playing with this batch of film and looking for the problem, I tried Vuescan instead of my normal Silverfast - I must admit the scans are better! - (but the lines haven't appeared with either software).
So to cut a long story, I'm none the wiser!
