That is kind of hard Richard. If you plot a camera profile in something like
Colorthink you can clearly see that the gamut is larger than any film. Now
if you then create your camera profile with another piece of kit you get a
different kit. So by changing profilir you change the gamut of your camera?
- I think not.

Gamut plots from camera profiles depend on extrapolation as the cameras can
see colours that cannot be produced on any camera target.

The only way to find out whether the gamut was bigger would be to shoot
something like a GretagMacbeth DC chart on ectachrome and on a DC camera,
then plot the images (not the profiles) in colorthink. This will give you an
indication of how both devices will record the colours on the DC chart.
Whether this will tell you what you need to know I can't tell.

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to accurately plot the gamut of
a DC camera - essentially they change depending on lighting.

However if you are really interested - Beware, shameless plug ahead, you
might want to consider pencilling out March 16th where Neil and myself will
be doing a colour management seminar on input (output is the day after,
March 17th.). Among others we'll have Dietmar Fuchs, product manager from
GretagMacbeth (responsible for GM's latest profiling solution - and a true
colour geek like the rest of us) available in a live DC profiling session
and panel discussion. If anyone can, he'd be the bloke who can answer your
question.

More information on the seminar to follow later this week.
(if anyone want a direct mail about the event please send a mail to:
<email[at]pixl.dk> (replace [at] with @), subject: seminar, and we'll keep
you posted.
