I am looking for information about how files from scan backs compare in

This may not quite answer your question, but there is a proper scientific
report 'evaluating color-image quality, and digital image capture' at
http://www.cis.rit.edu/research/mcsl/research/PDFs/Berns_art_digitize_lowres.pdf.
This compares the colour response of a scan back, 2D area array camera
(digital camera), scanned 10x8 Ektachrome film, and a special IBM ccd system
with filters matching the cone responses of the human visual system. The
scanback is described as having very poor color accuracy (as I remember). I
discuss it at greater length on the pdf I sent you a while back.

While most non-colour scientists (including me!) find colour science brain
bending, it still seems to me to be the best way to try and understand what
is going on in colour reproduction. I'm a bit pushed for time right now, but
am pretty fascinated by this topic and will give some thought to a longer
rambling.

The broken link Thomas Holm gave was probably the Rochester Institute of
Technology Image Permanence Institute at http://www.rit.edu/~661www1/.
